In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track during the course of six months. Following the time that Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in the year 2017, popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team on MIA (2018) and Madonna joined forces with Maluma on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. In 2020, a few Reggaeton musicians were complaining about the trend of the genre toward the mainstream. Yet, a young generation, such as Rauw Alejandro was determined to continue the evolution. The genre often incorporated electronic dance and other styles.
